Swedish Meatballs (Köttbullar)

Traditional Swedish meatballs served with creamy sauce, lingonberry jam, and mashed potatoes. A beloved classic from Swedish home cooking.

Ingredients

  • 500 gGround beef
  • 250 gGround pork
  • 100 gBreadcrumbs
  • 150 mlMilk
  • 1 pieceYellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 pieceEgg
  • 1 tspSalt
  • 0.5 tspWhite pepper
  • 50 gButter
  • 300 mlHeavy cream
  • 200 mlBeef stock
  • 1 tbspSoy sauce
  • 4 tbspLingonberry jam

Instructions

    Soak breadcrumbs in milk for 10 minutes until soft.

    In a large bowl, combine ground beef, ground pork, soaked breadcrumbs, chopped onion, egg, salt, and white pepper. Mix thoroughly with your hands.

    Shape the mixture into small, round meatballs about 2cm in diameter. You should get approximately 30-35 meatballs.

    Heat butter in a large frying pan over medium heat. Brown the meatballs on all sides, about 8-10 minutes total. Remove and set aside.

    In the same pan, add heavy cream and beef stock. Bring to a simmer and add soy sauce for color and flavor.

    Return meatballs to the pan and simmer in the cream sauce for 10-15 minutes until cooked through.

    Serve hot with mashed potatoes, lingonberry jam, and pickled cucumber on the side.
